the TOURIST Mountain
It is located 3954 meters above sea level. It is situated to the south of the Big Almaty Peak in the homonymous spur of this ridge. These two peaks are separated by the Zhusaly Kezen pass.
Despite the fact that the mountain is located at quite a height, it takes only a day to climb it. An incredible view opens from the peak! From a decent height, you can see an amazing panorama of the vast expanses of Zailiysky Alatau with your own eyes and get a bird’s-eye view of the green Almaty city quarters.
To get from Almaty to the scientific station, located in the Tien Shan highlands, you should drive past the Big Almaty Lake. The road is good here, you will be able to enjoy the scenery along the way. By the way, it is considered to be the highest mountain road in the country. Then, all you will need to do is to climb 624 meters – if counted vertically, to the Mountain of Tourists. Such an option is considered to be the rightest and shortest in terms of time and distance.
You can visit the Mountain of Tourists all year round. However, keep several factors in mind: ticks (found in May and June); in highlands it can be cold even on hot summer days, bright sun (sun screen is a must). Be sure to carry warm clothes so that not to feel cold in highlands or near a lake. By the way, if you wish you can also climb the Big Almaty Peak located nearby.
On the offered route, you will see numerous great landscapes. Arm yourself with a camera to take incredibly beautiful pictures. For example, you can capture Almaty city from high above, the highest point of Zailiysky Alatau in the east – Talgar peak 4,978 (5,010), Chatkal ridge, Kungay-Alatau (the ridge in Kyrgyzstan) and many other high-altitude points.

Year-round. In any season, in mountains might experience cool weather, which requires appropriate clothes.When travelling to the mountains in warm seasons, it can be sensible to equip yourself with a sunscreen, a hat and a protection against mites, snakes and spiders. Strong winds are frequent. |

Walking tours from the Big Almaty Lake (2700 metres) to the Greate Almaty Peak (3681 metres) and to Kanysh Satpayev’s (prev. Soviets) Peak (4317 meters) are possible. |

Astonishing photos and videos can be shot during our trip to the mountain, not talking about the peak itself!. On our way, we will observe the Great Almaty Peak (3681 m.) and the panoramic view on Almaty City from the north; peaks of Zailiyskiy Alatau, notably – the highest one of them – Talgar Peak (5010 m.) from the east, Kirgiz mountain spur – Kungey-Alatau, and beautiful Chatkal Spur (4760 m.) from the south. |
In January 2018, we walked next to the BAL and climbed the famous peak of Tourists. We want to tell you about it in this short review.
Our company consisted of five people. First, we drove to the Cosmostation, located in the Big Almaty Clove. We drove and walked a lot at the BAL, enjoying the wonderful local winter landscapes. Then, we were to climb the mountain of Tourists. Indeed, climbing there is simple, but the wind, frost and ice became serios obstacles. But we did it! From the height of the mountain of Tourists, we enjoyed an amazing view of the mountain ranges, including those located in neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
