GREAT ALMATY PEAK

The Big Almaty Peak proudly rises above the city, being 3,681 meters high. To onlookers it seems that the mountain, which can be clearly visible from Almaty (Alma-Ata) side, is extremely complicated. The unusual rocky triangle fascinates at the first gance. However, experienced tourists claim that it is not difficult at all to climb it. For example, climbing has a difficulty level of 1A only. You should drive to the Cosmostation by car, which is located 3,330 meters above sea level – and you will have to rise another 351 meters along a rocky slope. Usually, it takes no more than 2 hours in summer to climb it.

You can come here at any season. In May and June, ticks are found in the area, so be sure take care of protection in advance. Warm clothes are a must even in summer. And on sunny days, use a sun screen to protect yourself against ultraviolet rays.

If you want to take additional challenge, from the Zhusaly-Kezen pass you can start climbing the Mountain of Tourists, which is 273 meters higher than the Almaty peak. In the same area, you can also climb a more complicated peak – the Soviet peak. It is located 4,317 meters above sea level.

In any season, in mountains might experience cool weather, which requires appropriate clothes.When travelling to the mountains in warm seasons, it can be sensible to equip yourself with a sunscreen, a hat and a protection against mites, snakes and spiders. Strong winds are frequent.
Walking tours from the Big Almaty Lake (2700 metres) to Tourist Mountain (3954 metres) and to Kanysh Satpayev’s (prev. Soviets) Peak (4317 meters) are possible.
